Bile acids are naturally occurring compounds synthesized in the liver from cholesterol and play a critical physiological role in the hepatic system, particularly in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Therapeutically, certain bile acids such as ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and chenodeoxycholic acid have been used in medicine for decades, particularly in the treatment of cholestatic liver diseases (e.g., primary biliary cholangitis) and dissolution of cholesterol gallstones. The scientific rationale for their use includes their capacity to modulate bile composition, reduce bile toxicity, and promote bile flow, thereby supporting hepatic function. Clinical studies have demonstrated that UDCA can improve biochemical markers of liver function and may slow the progression of some liver diseases. However, the term "bile acid (unspecified)" is broad; not all bile acids have proven therapeutic benefit, and some (like deoxycholic acid) may be hepatotoxic at high concentrations.
