Evidence supporting the use of: Boerhavia diffussa
For the body system: Hepatic System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Boerhavia diffusa, commonly known as "Punarnava," is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for liver-related disorders, including jaundice and hepatitis. Recent scientific studies have begun to validate these traditional claims. Research has demonstrated that extracts of Boerhavia diffusa possess hepatoprotective properties, primarily attributed to its phytoconstituents such as punarnavine, boeravinones, and lignans. In several animal studies, Boerhavia diffusa root extracts have been shown to protect against chemically induced liver damage by reducing elevated liver enzyme levels (such as AST, ALT, and ALP) and improving antioxidant status within hepatic tissue. Some studies also report that it can mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation in liver tissue, which are key factors in hepatic injury.
Despite these positive findings, most evidence to date is preclinical, with a paucity of robust, large-scale human clinical trials to confirm efficacy and safety in humans. The mechanisms of action are not yet fully elucidated, but may involve antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and membrane-stabilizing effects. While the scientific evidence is promising and provides a rationale for its use to support liver health, the rating remains moderate (3/5) due to the limited clinical data. Continued research, including well-designed human studies, is necessary to further substantiate its role in hepatic support.
