Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Boldo (Peumus boldus) is a plant native to South America and has a long history of traditional use for supporting liver (hepatic) health. In folk medicine, particularly in Chile and other South American countries, boldo leaves have been used as a remedy for digestive disorders and liver ailments, including mild dyspepsia and as an adjunct in treating gallbladder problems. The leaves contain several bioactive compounds, notably boldine (an alkaloid), as well as essential oils and flavonoids, which are thought to contribute to its effects.

Scientifically, there is limited evidence supporting the efficacy of boldo for liver support. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that boldine has antioxidant and mild hepatoprotective properties, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The European Medicines Agency recognizes the traditional use of boldo for mild digestive complaints but does not endorse it for direct liver protection due to insufficient scientific data. Overall, while boldo is widely used in traditional medicine for hepatic support, its effectiveness has not been conclusively validated by modern clinical research.
