Evidence supporting the use of: Borotutu
For the body system: Hepatic System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Borotutu (Cochlospermum angolense) is traditionally used in West African herbal medicine to support liver health and treat hepatic conditions. The root bark of Borotutu has been employed in folk medicine to address jaundice, hepatitis, and other liver-related ailments. Ethnobotanical surveys and historical texts document its longstanding role in traditional healing practices, particularly in Angola and neighboring regions. However, while there are a few preliminary scientific studies investigating the antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of Borotutu extracts in animal models, robust human clinical trials are lacking. These animal studies suggest potential liver-protective effects, but the evidence is not strong enough to be considered scientifically validated. Therefore, the primary justification for its use comes from traditional knowledge rather than conclusive scientific research. The evidence rating reflects the gap between traditional usage and the current state of scientific validation.
