Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bupleurum is a genus of plants widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), most notably as an ingredient in formulas such as Xiao Chai Hu Tang ("Minor Bupleurum Decoction"). Its use to support the hepatic (liver) system is based primarily on centuries of traditional practice. In TCM, Bupleurum is thought to "soothe the liver," relieve stagnation, and aid in the treatment of liver-related symptoms such as irritability, digestive disturbances, and jaundice. Historical texts and modern TCM practitioners often recommend Bupleurum for liver health, and it is a key component in many herbal blends intended to protect or detoxify the liver.

Scientific evidence for Bupleurum’s efficacy in supporting hepatic function is limited but emerging. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that compounds in Bupleurum, such as saikosaponins, may have hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence is not sufficient to draw firm conclusions about its effectiveness or safety for liver health. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and some preclinical research is promising, the overall evidence does not reach the level of rigorous scientific validation.
