Carqueja (Baccharis trimera) has a long-standing history of use in traditional South American herbal medicine, particularly within Brazilian folk medicine, for supporting liver (hepatic) health. Traditionally, Carqueja tea or extracts have been used as a "liver tonic," believed to aid digestion, support bile production, and help protect the liver from damage caused by toxins or alcohol. Documentation of its use dates back several centuries, where it was commonly recommended for symptoms associated with poor liver function, such as jaundice, sluggish digestion, and bloating.

Scientific studies on Carqueja's hepatic benefits are limited in both number and quality, though some preclinical research (in vitro and animal studies) suggests the plant contains flavonoids, saponins, and diterpenes with antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties. These compounds may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver. For example, a few animal studies report protective effects against experimentally-induced liver damage.

However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and the available evidence is not sufficient to conclusively validate its efficacy or safety for liver health in humans. Thus, while Carqueja is traditionally used to support the hepatic system and there is some preliminary scientific rationale, the primary justification for its use remains traditional.
