Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Chinese Thoroughwax (Bupleurum chinense), also known as Chai Hu, has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support liver (hepatic) health and function. In TCM, it is believed to "soothe the liver," harmonize the body's energy (qi), and treat conditions such as liver stagnation, hepatitis, and related emotional disturbances. It is a principal herb in classic formulas like Xiao Yao San and Chai Hu Shu Gan San, which are widely prescribed for liver-related symptoms.

Modern research has identified several bioactive compounds in Bupleurum, such as saikosaponins, which may possess anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and immune-modulating properties. Some in vivo and in vitro studies suggest that these compounds can reduce liver enzyme levels and protect liver cells from chemically-induced injury. However, robust clinical trials in humans are limited, and the majority of evidence comes from animal studies or traditional use records.

While there is some preliminary scientific support for its liver-protective effects, the primary justification for using Chinese Thoroughwax to support the hepatic system remains traditional. Therefore, the evidence rating is moderate, reflecting strong traditional use with growing but still limited scientific validation.
