Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chrysanthellum americanum, also known as American yellowhead, has a history of traditional use in folk medicine, particularly in Central and South America and parts of Africa. It has been used to support liver health and manage hepatic disorders such as jaundice and hepatitis. The traditional rationale for its use in hepatic support is based on its application as a cholagogue and hepato-protective agent in ethnomedicine, where herbal infusions or extracts were administered to promote bile flow and aid liver function.

While some preclinical studies have identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in extracts of Chrysanthellum americanum, suggesting a potential mechanism for liver protection, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The traditional use is referenced in ethnobotanical literature, but scientific validation remains preliminary. Therefore, while its use for supporting the hepatic system is justified by tradition, current research evidence is limited and does not yet provide a strong scientific basis for efficacy or safety in liver support.
