Myricetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in various fruits, vegetables, teas, and medicinal plants. Scientific studies have investigated its potential hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) effects, with promising but mostly preclinical (animal and in vitro) results. Research indicates that myricetin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties, all of which are relevant to hepatic health.
Animal studies have shown that myricetin can ameliorate liver injury induced by toxins such as carbon tetrachloride, acetaminophen, and alcohol. These protective effects are attributed to its ability to reduce oxidative stress, inhibit lipid peroxidation, suppress inflammatory cytokines, and modulate signaling pathways involved in cell survival and apoptosis. Additionally, myricetin has demonstrated the potential to inhibit hepatic stellate cell activation, a key event in liver fibrosis.
Despite these positive findings in laboratory settings, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for myricetin’s use in supporting the hepatic system, the evidence is not yet strong enough for definitive clinical recommendations. Overall, myricetin’s hepatoprotective effects are supported mainly by experimental studies, and further research—including human trials—is needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for liver health.
