Oxymatrine is an alkaloid extracted from the root of Sophora flavescens, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Its use for supporting the hepatic (liver) system is supported by a growing body of scientific research, primarily from studies conducted in China. Preclinical studies have shown that oxymatrine possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antifibrotic properties. These effects are believed to be beneficial in managing liver diseases such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and liver fibrosis. Several animal studies and a number of small clinical trials have demonstrated that oxymatrine can reduce liver inflammation, inhibit viral replication (particularly hepatitis B virus), and decrease the progression of fibrosis by modulating immune responses and reducing oxidative stress. However, while these findings are promising, the majority of the evidence comes from laboratory and animal models, and the clinical trials conducted so far are limited in size and methodological rigor. Larger, well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in humans. In summary, oxymatrine's use for liver support is backed by scientific studies, but the strength of the evidence is moderate due to the current limitations in clinical research.
