Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phenylpropanoids are a diverse class of plant secondary metabolites that include compounds such as cinnamic acid, eugenol, and coumarins. Traditionally, various plants rich in phenylpropanoids have been used in herbal medicine systems (such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine) to support liver health and function. This traditional use is based on empirical observations rather than rigorous scientific validation. Some phenylpropanoid-containing herbs, such as milk thistle (Silybum marianum, rich in silymarin, a flavonolignan complex), have become popular for hepatic support, but silymarin itself is not a phenylpropanoid, though related. There are limited preclinical studies suggesting that some phenylpropanoids may have hepatoprotective properties through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. However, clinical evidence in humans is sparse, and the mechanisms are not fully understood. Most of the support for using unspecified phenylpropanoids for the hepatic system remains rooted in tradition, with only modest evidence from laboratory studies and little high-quality clinical research to confirm efficacy or safety for liver support in humans.
