Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phthalides, a group of naturally occurring compounds primarily found in plants like celery and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Szechuan lovage), have a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, extracts containing phthalides have been used to "invigorate the blood" and support the liver ("hepatic") system, especially in formulas aimed at treating blood stasis and promoting liver health. While some preclinical studies suggest that phthalides possess antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties, these findings are mostly limited to animal models or in vitro experiments. There is a lack of robust clinical trials demonstrating clear benefits of phthalides for hepatic health in humans. Therefore, the primary justification for using phthalides to support the hepatic system is rooted in traditional medicine practices, with only limited scientific investigation to date. The evidence rating is moderate due to the strong traditional use but relatively weak direct human research.
