Punicalagin is a polyphenol compound found predominantly in pomegranate (Punica granatum) and is known for its antioxidant properties. There is emerging scientific evidence suggesting beneficial effects of punicalagin on the hepatic system, mainly through its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory actions. Preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have demonstrated that punicalagin can attenuate liver injury by reducing oxidative stress, modulating inflammatory cytokines, and improving histopathological markers in models of chemically induced hepatic damage. Some studies have shown that punicalagin can decrease markers of liver fibrosis and lipid accumulation, suggesting potential for use in conditions like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
However, while these findings are promising, clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most data come from animal studies or studies using pomegranate extracts rather than isolated punicalagin. There is a lack of large-scale, well-controlled human trials directly assessing punicalagin’s effects on liver health. Thus, while the ingredient is used in some supplements aimed at supporting liver function, the current scientific validation is modest and does not yet warrant strong recommendations for its use in liver conditions. Further research, particularly clinical trials in humans, is needed to establish efficacy and optimal dosing.
