Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Angelica (referring primarily to Angelica sinensis or Angelica archangelica) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and some European folk practices. In TCM, Angelica sinensis (Dong Quai) is commonly used as a blood tonic and is sometimes included in complex herbal formulas intended to support the liver, improve circulation, and rebalance the body's systems. Some traditional herbal texts mention its use in the context of liver health or "liver stagnation," which may encompass symptoms associated with hepatitis, but these references are generally indirect. There is no clear documentation of Angelica being used specifically and solely to treat hepatitis in classical texts; rather, it is used for broader liver support or to strengthen the body during recovery from chronic illnesses.

Scientific validation for Angelica’s effectiveness in treating hepatitis is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that certain compounds in Angelica species may have hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, or antioxidant effects, but high-quality human clinical trials are lacking. Reviews of the literature do not support Angelica as a standalone or primary treatment for hepatitis, and it is not recognized in evidence-based guidelines for hepatitis management. Thus, its use is justified primarily by tradition, with limited scientific evidence (hence, a rating of 2).
