Antrodia camphorata, also known as "niu-chang chih," is a medicinal mushroom native to Taiwan and has a long history of use in traditional Taiwanese medicine. Its use for liver-related ailments, including hepatitis, is primarily supported by preclinical scientific studies rather than robust clinical trials. Laboratory research has demonstrated that extracts of Antrodia camphorata possess hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Specifically, in vitro and animal studies suggest that the mushroom can attenuate liver damage induced by toxins and may inhibit viral replication relevant to hepatitis B and C.

For example, several studies have shown that polysaccharides and triterpenoids from Antrodia camphorata can reduce markers of liver inflammation and oxidative stress in animal models of hepatitis. Some research indicates potential inhibition of hepatitis B virus surface antigen expression in cell culture experiments. However, despite these promising findings, there is a lack of high-quality human clinical trials to confirm its efficacy or safety in hepatitis patients. Thus, while the scientific rationale exists and preliminary data are encouraging, the evidence remains limited to experimental and animal research. Larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed before Antrodia camphorata can be recommended as a treatment for hepatitis in humans.
