Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Baccharoides anthelmintica (synonym: Vernonia anthelmintica), commonly known as Kalijiri, has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine in South Asia, including Ayurveda and Unani. Its seeds and other parts are cited in traditional texts for the treatment of liver disorders, jaundice, and as a general hepatoprotective agent. However, these uses are primarily based on ethnobotanical knowledge and anecdotal evidence rather than rigorous scientific investigation. A review of the scientific literature reveals very limited experimental data regarding its efficacy specifically for hepatitis. Some in vitro and animal studies have explored the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of Baccharoides anthelmintica extracts, which could theoretically confer some hepatoprotective effects. However, direct evidence supporting its use in the management or treatment of viral hepatitis or other forms of hepatitis is lacking. There are no published clinical trials or robust preclinical studies that confirm its efficacy or safety for this indication. In summary, while the traditional use of Baccharoides anthelmintica in supporting liver health and treating hepatitis exists, scientific validation for these applications remains minimal. The rating of 1 reflects the presence of a traditional basis but little to no strong scientific support.
