Evidence supporting the use of: Bael
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bael (Aegle marmelos) has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems in India for a variety of liver disorders, including hepatitis. Historical texts describe the use of bael fruit, leaves, and extracts for their supposed hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) properties. The rationale for its use includes its purported ability to reduce inflammation, improve digestion, and promote liver health. There are a few laboratory studies suggesting that bael extracts may have antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects in animal models; however, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while bael is commonly recommended in traditional settings for hepatitis, the current scientific evidence to support its efficacy in treating or supporting hepatitis is limited and mostly preclinical. The practice is therefore primarily justified by tradition, with some preliminary scientific indications but without strong, high-quality human data to validate its effectiveness for hepatitis.
