Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Black root (Veronicastrum virginicum), also known as Culver's root, has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American and early American settlers. It was primarily used as a bitter tonic, laxative, and to support liver and digestive health. In traditional herbal texts, black root was sometimes recommended for "bilious" conditions, which referred to ailments thought to be related to bile and the liver, including jaundice and general liver congestion. However, there is very limited specific documentation of its use for hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) itself.

Modern scientific research on black root is extremely limited, and there are no clinical studies supporting its efficacy or safety for treating hepatitis. There are also concerns about potential toxicity and gastrointestinal irritation with its use. The rationale for its use in liver conditions is based on traditional beliefs about promoting bile flow and "cleansing" the liver, rather than on scientific validation. Thus, while there is some historical use of black root for liver-related complaints, evidence for its use specifically in hepatitis is weak and not substantiated by modern research.
