Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese silkvine
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Silkvine (Periploca sepium) has a long-standing history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is referred to as "Xi Xian Cao" or "Lu Luo Teng." Historically, it has been employed for its purported effects in dispelling wind-dampness, unblocking meridians, and alleviating various inflammatory and rheumatic conditions. In the context of hepatitis, Chinese Silkvine is sometimes included in multi-herbal formulas aimed at supporting liver health and reducing inflammation, based on TCM theories of balancing liver qi and clearing heat toxins.
However, scientific validation for its use in hepatitis is minimal. A handful of laboratory studies have investigated the plant's bioactive compounds, such as periplocin and other cardiac glycosides, which show anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in vitro and in animal models. There is no direct evidence from controlled clinical trials to support the efficacy or safety of Chinese Silkvine in treating viral hepatitis or other liver diseases in humans. Some animal studies suggest possible hepatoprotective effects, but these findings remain preliminary and have not translated into clinical recommendations.
In summary, the use of Chinese Silkvine for hepatitis is primarily based on traditional practices, with limited scientific evidence available. The overall quality of evidence is low, and further research is needed to establish its safety and effectiveness for liver conditions.
