Evidence supporting the use of: Coriolus mushroom
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Coriolus versicolor (also known as Trametes versicolor or "Turkey Tail" mushroom) has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine, but there is also a substantial body of scientific research supporting its use for liver health, including hepatitis. The primary bioactive components are polysaccharopeptides such as PSK (polysaccharide-K) and PSP (polysaccharide-peptide), which have demonstrated immunomodulatory, antiviral, and hepatoprotective properties in preclinical and some clinical studies.
Several in vitro and animal model studies have shown that extracts of Coriolus versicolor can inhibit hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication and reduce markers of liver inflammation. A few small clinical trials have evaluated the adjunct use of Coriolus extracts (especially PSK or PSP) in patients with chronic hepatitis B or C, with some suggesting improved liver function tests and reduction in viral markers. However, these studies tend to have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes, lack of blinding, or insufficient controls.
While the evidence is not robust enough for Coriolus versicolor to be considered a standalone treatment for hepatitis, the existing data justify ongoing research and suggest potential benefits as an adjunctive therapy. Major reviews and pharmacopoeias in China and Japan recognize its use in liver conditions. Overall, the scientific evidence is moderate, meriting a score of 3, with further high-quality clinical trials needed to confirm its efficacy and safety for hepatitis patients.
