Evidence supporting the use of: Cysteine
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cysteine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to glutathione, a critical antioxidant in the liver. Its use in supporting or treating hepatitis is based on the scientific understanding that hepatitis—whether viral or non-viral—often involves oxidative stress and liver cell damage. By boosting glutathione synthesis, cysteine (most commonly as N-acetylcysteine, or NAC) may help replenish antioxidant defenses in the liver, potentially reducing liver injury.
The scientific evidence supporting cysteine's use in hepatitis is modest. Some clinical studies and animal models indicate that NAC can reduce liver enzyme levels and markers of oxidative stress in acute hepatitis, particularly in cases of acetaminophen-induced liver failure, where NAC is the established therapy. However, for viral hepatitis (such as hepatitis B or C), research is limited. A few small trials and experimental studies suggest that NAC may improve liver function tests and reduce oxidative injury, but results are inconsistent and not sufficient for widespread clinical recommendation.
Overall, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive data for cysteine's use (as NAC) in specific types of liver injury, especially acute toxic hepatitis, the evidence for chronic viral hepatitis is weak, and larger, well-controlled studies are needed. Thus, its use in hepatitis is scientifically grounded but not robustly validated for all forms of the disease.
