Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Desmodium adscendens is primarily used in traditional medicine, particularly in West African countries, for the management of liver disorders including hepatitis. The plant, known locally as "Amor seco," has been incorporated into ethnomedical practices for generations, where decoctions or infusions from its leaves and stems are administered to those suffering from symptoms consistent with hepatitis, such as jaundice and general liver inflammation. This traditional use is documented in several ethnobotanical surveys and reviews focused on herbal remedies for hepatic conditions in Africa. Scientific investigations into Desmodium adscendens have identified various phytochemicals, including alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids, some of which may have hepatoprotective properties in vitro or in animal models. However, the clinical evidence in humans is extremely limited. There are a few preclinical studies suggesting that extracts of Desmodium adscendens can exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that may protect liver tissue from chemically induced damage in animal models. Nonetheless, there are no robust clinical trials in humans that confirm its efficacy or safety for treating hepatitis. Therefore, while the plant's use for hepatitis is well-rooted in tradition and supported by some preclinical findings, the scientific validation remains weak, and more rigorous research is necessary before it can be recommended on evidence-based grounds.
