Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the main catechin found in green tea, has attracted scientific interest for its potential hepatoprotective and antiviral properties, particularly regarding hepatitis. Preclinical research demonstrates that EGCG can inhibit the replication of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in cell cultures and animal models. The proposed mechanisms include direct inhibition of viral entry into hepatocytes, modulation of immune responses, and antioxidant effects that may reduce liver inflammation and fibrosis. For example, studies published in journals such as Hepatology and Antiviral Research show that EGCG can block HBV DNA synthesis and suppress HCV entry into liver cells.

However, while these findings are promising, the clinical evidence in humans remains limited. Few small-scale clinical trials have been conducted, and those available have not yet established EGCG as an effective or standard treatment for hepatitis. Safety concerns, particularly at high doses, and variability in bioavailability also limit its clinical application. Thus, the use of EGCG in hepatitis is supported by early scientific research (especially in vitro and animal studies), but robust human data are lacking, and major guidelines do not currently recommend EGCG as a treatment for hepatitis. Ongoing research may clarify its role in the future.
