Evidence supporting the use of: Ficus simplicissima
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ficus simplicissima is a plant traditionally used in various Asian medicinal systems, particularly in Vietnam and neighboring countries. Its use in treating liver conditions, including hepatitis, is primarily rooted in traditional medicine rather than robust scientific validation. Ethnobotanical surveys and folk medicine records indicate that decoctions or extracts from the leaves and stems of Ficus simplicissima have been employed by traditional healers for the management of jaundice, hepatitis, and other liver-related ailments. The rationale for its use often stems from the plant’s perceived abilities to detoxify the liver and promote general hepatic health according to traditional beliefs.
However, scientific studies specifically examining the efficacy of Ficus simplicissima for hepatitis or liver disease are scarce. Some laboratory investigations have reported antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in extracts of this species or closely related Ficus species, which could theoretically confer hepatoprotective effects. Nevertheless, direct clinical evidence or well-designed animal studies demonstrating its benefit in hepatitis are lacking. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition, the current scientific evidence remains limited, and further research would be required to confirm any therapeutic effect.
