Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flat-stem milk-vetch (Astragalus complanatus) is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems primarily to support liver health, including as an adjunct for hepatitis. Its traditional use is based on the belief that it can "tonify Qi" and support organ function, particularly the liver and spleen. Historically, TCM practitioners have included Astragalus species in herbal formulas intended to treat symptoms associated with chronic hepatitis, such as fatigue and poor appetite, although Astragalus complanatus is less commonly cited than Astragalus membranaceus. Scientific evidence specifically validating the efficacy of Flat-stem milk-vetch (Astragalus complanatus) for hepatitis is limited. Most available studies focus on Astragalus membranaceus, a related species, which has demonstrated some hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects in cell and animal models, and a few small human studies. For Astragalus complanatus, there are preclinical studies suggesting antioxidant and liver-protective effects in animal models, but these are preliminary. No robust, well-controlled clinical trials have evaluated its effectiveness for hepatitis in humans. In summary, the use of Flat-stem milk-vetch for hepatitis is primarily justified by traditional use rather than strong scientific evidence. The evidence supporting its use is weak to moderate and is mostly based on extrapolation from related species and traditional practices rather than direct clinical research.
