Evidence supporting the use of: Ganoderma
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ganoderma lucidum, commonly known as Reishi or Lingzhi, has a long-standing history in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for supporting liver health, including the treatment of hepatitis. Traditional texts describe its use to "nourish the liver," "detoxify," and "remove dampness," which are interpreted within TCM frameworks as beneficial for conditions like hepatitis. The mushroom is believed to have general hepatoprotective effects and is sometimes prescribed alongside other herbs in complex formulas intended for chronic hepatitis and liver dysfunction.
Modern scientific studies provide some preliminary support for Ganoderma's use in liver health but remain inconclusive, especially regarding hepatitis specifically. In vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that extracts from Ganoderma lucidum can reduce markers of liver inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. Some small clinical studies suggest potential benefits of Ganoderma supplementation in improving liver enzyme levels (such as ALT and AST) in patients with chronic hepatitis B or C. However, these studies often suffer from methodological limitations, small sample sizes, and lack of rigorous controls. Large-scale, randomized controlled trials are lacking.
In summary, Ganoderma's use for hepatitis is primarily based on traditional use, with some limited scientific exploration. The evidence is not strong enough for firm clinical recommendations, but its historical role in TCM is well-established.
