Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hygrophila (commonly known as "Kulekhara" or "Talmakhana") has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda and Unani, for the management of liver disorders, including hepatitis. Traditional texts cite its use as a hepatoprotective and tonic agent, believed to promote liver function and aid recovery from jaundice and hepatitis-like symptoms. The root and aerial parts are commonly used in herbal formulations for these indications.

Scientific research into Hygrophila's efficacy for hepatitis is limited. Some animal studies suggest that extracts of Hygrophila auriculata may exhibit hepatoprotective activity, potentially by reducing liver enzyme levels and oxidative stress induced by toxins. However, these studies are preliminary, often with small sample sizes and lacking clinical trials in humans with hepatitis. No robust, peer-reviewed clinical evidence currently validates its effectiveness for viral hepatitis in humans.

In summary, while there is a strong traditional basis for the use of Hygrophila in supporting liver health and treating hepatitis-like symptoms, scientific validation is weak and largely preclinical. Its use for hepatitis is therefore justified by tradition, with only modest experimental support and no conclusive human data.
