Hyperoside is a flavonoid glycoside commonly found in plants such as Hypericum perforatum (St. John's Wort) and Crataegus species. Several in vitro and animal studies have investigated its hepatoprotective effects, particularly in the context of chemically induced liver injury and viral hepatitis models. Hyperoside has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties, which are believed to contribute to its ability to protect liver cells from damage. Specifically, studies have shown that Hyperoside can reduce markers of liver inflammation and oxidative stress, and improve liver enzyme profiles in animal models of hepatitis and liver toxicity (e.g., induced by carbon tetrachloride or D-galactosamine). Some mechanisms proposed include upregulation of endogenous antioxidant systems (such as SOD and CAT), inhibition of NF-κB signaling, and stabilization of mitochondrial function.
However, the current evidence base consists mainly of preclinical studies. There are no robust human clinical trials directly assessing the efficacy of Hyperoside in patients with hepatitis (viral or otherwise). As such, while there is a scientific rationale and early preclinical support for its use in supporting liver health and potentially hepatitis, the evidence is not yet strong or conclusive. This warrants a moderate evidence rating (2/5), indicating scientific interest and preliminary data, but insufficient clinical validation for routine use in hepatitis treatment or support.
