Evidence supporting the use of: L-Gluthathione
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
L-Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide that acts as a major antioxidant in the liver and elsewhere in the body. Its use in supporting liver health, including in hepatitis, has some scientific rationale. Glutathione is depleted in various liver diseases, including viral and non-viral hepatitis, and its antioxidant properties are thought to help reduce oxidative stress and cellular damage in hepatocytes. Some small clinical studies and experimental research have shown that glutathione supplementation (oral or intravenous) can improve certain biochemical markers of liver function and reduce liver inflammation in patients with chronic hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
However, the clinical evidence is limited and often of low quality. Most studies are small, short-term, and lack rigorous controls. There is no strong evidence that L-glutathione supplementation significantly alters disease progression, clears hepatitis viruses, or improves long-term outcomes. The most robust data suggest it may have a modest adjunctive effect on liver enzyme normalization and oxidative stress reduction, rather than being a primary treatment. Glutathione is not included in standard hepatitis treatment guidelines. Its use is more common as a supportive or complementary therapy rather than a primary intervention.
In summary, there is scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence supporting glutathione’s hepatoprotective effects, but robust clinical validation is lacking. Its use is best viewed as adjunctive, with a moderate evidence rating of 2 out of 5.
