Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Patrinia, a genus of plants used in traditional East Asian medicine (notably Patrinia scabiosaefolia and Patrinia villosa), has historically been included in herbal formulations for the treatment of liver disorders, including hepatitis. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) texts describe Patrinia as having "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties, which are believed to help with liver inflammation and jaundice, symptoms commonly associated with hepatitis. These uses are documented in classical materia medica and remain part of some contemporary traditional herbal combinations for hepatitis support in China and Japan.

However, scientific validation for Patrinia's efficacy against hepatitis is limited. Preclinical studies have shown some anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects in animal models, such as reduction in liver enzyme levels and histological improvement in chemically induced liver injury. Despite these findings, there are no high-quality human clinical trials that specifically evaluate Patrinia as a monotherapy or in combination for the treatment of hepatitis. Most published research remains at the in vitro or animal stage, and clinical evidence is lacking.

In summary, the use of Patrinia for hepatitis is primarily justified by traditional use rather than robust scientific evidence. While there is some laboratory support for hepatoprotective effects, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
