Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Plum fruit (from species such as Prunus domestica) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in some Asian cultures, for supporting liver health, including conditions like hepatitis. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), certain types of plums are thought to "clear heat" and "detoxify," which may have led to their occasional use in the management of hepatitis symptoms. However, the use of plum specifically for hepatitis is not a major part of mainstream TCM or Ayurveda, and references are relatively sparse compared to other more commonly used herbs or fruits for liver conditions (such as milk thistle or schisandra). From a scientific perspective, there is limited evidence to support the use of plum fruit for treating hepatitis. Plums are rich in antioxidants, polyphenols, and vitamin C, which contribute to general health and may have mild supportive effects on liver function. A few laboratory studies have suggested antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of plum extracts in animal models, but these findings are preliminary and not directly translatable to clinical use for hepatitis in humans. There are no well-designed clinical trials supporting plums as a treatment for hepatitis. Therefore, while there is some traditional use, the scientific evidence is minimal and does not currently justify recommending plum fruit as a primary treatment or supportive therapy for hepatitis.
