Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Asia and parts of Europe, for a variety of liver-related conditions, including hepatitis. In recent decades, scientific interest has grown regarding its hepatoprotective properties. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that Sea Buckthorn extracts—rich in flavonoids, vitamins, and unsaturated fatty acids—exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that may protect liver cells from damage. Animal models of chemically induced hepatitis have shown that Sea Buckthorn can reduce markers of liver injury and improve liver histology. Some studies also suggest that its bioactive compounds may inhibit hepatic fibrosis and modulate immune responses relevant to hepatitis. However, the evidence in humans remains limited. Few small-scale clinical trials have explored Sea Buckthorn’s effect in patients with hepatitis, and these studies tend to suffer from methodological limitations such as small sample sizes, lack of control groups, or short durations. As a result, while there is scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for its hepatoprotective effects, robust clinical validation is lacking. Therefore, Sea Buckthorn is used to support hepatitis primarily on the basis of promising preclinical findings, rather than conclusive human data. Health professionals generally regard its use as potentially beneficial but emphasize the need for more rigorous clinical research before it can be recommended as a standard adjunctive treatment for hepatitis.
