Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea Buckthorn Oil has been used in traditional medicine, particularly in Tibetan, Mongolian, and Chinese systems, for supporting liver health and treating conditions like hepatitis. Traditional texts and ethnomedical reports describe preparations of sea buckthorn berries and oil being applied to improve liver function, reduce inflammation, and aid in recovery from hepatic diseases, including hepatitis. The rationale in these systems often centers on the oil's purported ability to "clear heat" or "remove toxins" from the body, which aligns with the symptoms of hepatitis such as jaundice and liver inflammation.

Modern scientific studies provide limited but promising preclinical evidence for the hepatoprotective effects of sea buckthorn oil, mainly attributed to its antioxidant compounds (such as vitamin E, carotenoids, and flavonoids) and anti-inflammatory fatty acids. Some animal studies have shown that sea buckthorn oil may reduce liver enzyme levels and histological liver damage induced by toxins. However, robust human clinical trials focusing on hepatitis patients are lacking, and the evidence from such studies is insufficient to make firm recommendations. Thus, while its use is clearly supported by tradition, scientific validation remains preliminary and limited in scope.
