Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) has been used in various traditional systems of medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani, for its purported liver-protective and detoxifying properties. In some regions, sugar cane juice is recommended as a tonic for the liver and is believed to assist in the recovery from jaundice, a common symptom of hepatitis. The traditional rationale is based on sugar cane's cooling, hydrating effects, and its ability to provide quick energy, which is thought to support the body during convalescence from liver ailments.

However, scientific evidence supporting the use of sugar cane for hepatitis is extremely limited. Some in vitro studies have indicated antioxidant activity in sugar cane extracts, which could theoretically benefit liver health, but there are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies directly demonstrating efficacy against hepatitis viruses or liver inflammation. Thus, while sugar cane remains a popular traditional remedy for liver complaints in some cultures, its use is not validated by modern scientific research, and its efficacy for hepatitis is unproven.
