Sumac (Rhus spp.), particularly Rhus coriaria, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems in regions such as the Middle East and the Mediterranean. In these traditional practices, sumac has been used for various ailments, including as a remedy for liver-related conditions, which sometimes encompasses hepatitis. The rationale often centers on sumac’s reputed antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. However, while there are preliminary in vitro and animal studies suggesting that sumac extracts may have hepatoprotective effects, these findings are limited and not specific to viral hepatitis in humans. There is a lack of well-designed clinical trials or robust scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of sumac for treating or supporting hepatitis in humans. Most references to its use for hepatitis are found in traditional medicine texts and ethnobotanical surveys, rather than peer-reviewed clinical research. Therefore, while sumac may be used traditionally for liver health and possibly hepatitis, its use is not currently validated by scientific research, and the evidence supporting such an application remains weak and anecdotal.
