Swertia, particularly species like Swertia chirayita, has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the management of liver disorders, including hepatitis. In these traditions, Swertia is considered to possess hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties. Ancient texts and ethnobotanical surveys document its use in decoctions or extracts for symptoms associated with jaundice, hepatitis, and other liver ailments.

Scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Swertia for hepatitis is limited but growing. Some preclinical studies in animal models have demonstrated that extracts of Swertia spp. may reduce liver enzyme levels, improve antioxidant status, and mitigate liver tissue damage caused by toxins. The likely bioactive compounds include xanthones, iridoids, and secoiridoid glycosides such as swertiamarin and amarogentin, which have shown hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in vivo.

However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains preliminary. The few studies available are either small-scale, not well-controlled, or do not focus specifically on hepatitis in humans. As a result, while the traditional use of Swertia for hepatitis is well-established, scientific validation is not yet sufficient for a strong recommendation. Caution should be exercised, and patients should consult healthcare professionals before using Swertia for liver conditions.
