In traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, tamarind pulp, leaves, and bark have been used for a variety of ailments, including liver disorders such as hepatitis and jaundice. The rationale for its use typically centers around its perceived "cooling" and detoxifying properties, as well as its mild laxative effects that are thought to help cleanse the body of toxins.

However, scientific studies specifically investigating tamarind’s efficacy against hepatitis in humans are limited. Some preclinical studies have shown that tamarind extracts possess antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects in animal models, suggesting potential to reduce liver damage from toxins or oxidative stress. For instance, a few studies in rats exposed to liver toxins showed that tamarind leaf or pulp extracts could reduce markers of liver injury.
