Evidence supporting the use of: Trametes
For the health condition: Hepatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Trametes, particularly Trametes versicolor (commonly known as Turkey Tail), has been studied for its potential hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory properties, which are relevant to hepatitis. The primary scientific interest centers on its polysaccharopeptides, such as polysaccharide-K (PSK) and polysaccharide peptide (PSP), which have demonstrated immune-boosting effects in preclinical and some clinical studies. In vitro and animal studies suggest that these compounds may help protect liver cells from damage and modulate immune responses, offering theoretical benefits in viral hepatitis. For instance, some research indicates that Trametes extracts can reduce liver enzyme levels and inhibit replication of certain hepatitis viruses in experimental models. However, robust clinical evidence in humans with hepatitis is limited. A few small-scale clinical trials and case studies, mostly from Asia, have reported improvements in liver function markers or symptoms when Trametes preparations are used as adjunct therapy. These studies often suffer from methodological weaknesses, such as small sample sizes, lack of control groups, or combined interventions. No large, high-quality randomized controlled trials have definitively established safety or efficacy for hepatitis treatment. As a result, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence supporting the use of Trametes in hepatitis, the overall quality and quantity of human data is not sufficient to strongly recommend it as a primary therapy.
