Evidence supporting the use of: Fomes fomentarius
For the health condition: Herpes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Fomes fomentarius, also known as tinder fungus or hoof fungus, has a long history of use in traditional medicine across Eurasia. Its uses have included wound healing, anti-inflammatory purposes, and as a styptic. There are records in folk medicine describing its use for various skin ailments, but there is limited specific historical documentation for its use against herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Scientific studies on Fomes fomentarius have identified polysaccharides, triterpenes, and other bioactive compounds with possible antimicrobial effects, and some in vitro research has found moderate antiviral activity against certain viruses. However, direct scientific studies evaluating its efficacy against HSV (the virus responsible for oral and genital herpes) are scarce or lacking, and there is no robust clinical trial evidence. Therefore, its use for herpes is primarily justified by traditional medicinal practices rather than scientific validation. The evidence supporting its use for herpes is weak, mostly resting on general antiviral or skin-healing reputations rather than HSV-specific effects.
