Evidence supporting the use of: Sandalwood
For the health condition: Herpes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sandalwood (usually from Santalum album) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and traditional medicines, primarily for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and soothing properties. In the context of herpes (Herpes simplex virus infections), sandalwood has been used traditionally in the form of pastes or oils applied to the skin to reduce discomfort, soothe irritation, and possibly promote healing of sores. However, there is scant scientific evidence to support these traditional claims. Only a handful of in vitro studies have examined the antiviral potential of sandalwood oil or its components, and these do not specifically address herpes viruses with robust data. There are no well-designed clinical trials or substantial laboratory studies validating the efficacy of sandalwood against herpes in humans. Thus, its use for herpes is based almost entirely on historical and anecdotal practice rather than confirmed scientific evidence. Users should be cautious and not rely on sandalwood as a primary treatment for herpes, especially in lieu of proven antiviral therapies.
