Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Solanum indicum (also known as Indian nightshade or poison berry) is used in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Siddha, for a variety of ailments including skin diseases, respiratory issues, and fevers. There is some mention in traditional texts that preparations containing Solanum indicum are used for treating skin eruptions and lesions, which could include symptoms similar to those seen in herpes infections. However, there is no clear or direct reference in authoritative historical medical texts specifically linking Solanum indicum to the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections. The plant’s use appears to be based more on its general application to skin issues and inflammation.

Scientifically, there is a lack of published research or clinical trials that directly investigate the efficacy of Solanum indicum against herpes simplex virus or herpes symptoms. While some in vitro studies have documented antiviral or anti-inflammatory properties of related Solanum species, these findings cannot be reliably extrapolated to herpes, nor to Solanum indicum specifically. As such, the evidence supporting its use for herpes is primarily rooted in tradition, with very weak or indirect support. Until more targeted research is conducted, its use for this condition remains only traditionally justified.
