Evidence supporting the use of: Thuja
For the health condition: Herpes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Thuja occidentalis (commonly known as arborvitae or white cedar) has a long history of use in traditional herbal and homeopathic medicine. In the context of herpes and other viral infections, Thuja has been utilized primarily in homeopathic preparations and by herbalists, particularly in European and North American traditions. The rationale for its use often stems from its purported antiviral and immune-modulating properties, as well as its historical application for skin conditions such as warts and lesions, which may resemble herpetic sores. However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Thuja for herpes is minimal. While some in vitro studies suggest that extracts of Thuja may have general antiviral or immunostimulatory effects, there is no robust clinical evidence demonstrating its effectiveness specifically against herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in humans. The majority of references to Thuja’s use for herpes are anecdotal or based on homeopathic case reports rather than controlled clinical trials. As such, its use for herpes is justified by tradition rather than by scientific validation, and the evidence supporting its use is weak.
