Transfer Factor is a low-molecular-weight immune extract derived from leukocytes or colostrum, purported to modulate immune responses. Its use in herpes, particularly herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, is supported by some scientific studies, though the evidence is limited and of moderate quality. Early research from the 1970s and 1980s, including small clinical trials and case reports, indicated that Transfer Factor may reduce the frequency and severity of herpes recurrences, likely by enhancing cell-mediated immunity, which is crucial in controlling HSV infections. For instance, studies such as those by Steele et al. (1980) and Lawrence (1981) reported decreased recurrence rates and improved symptoms in patients with recurrent herpes treated with Transfer Factor. However, these studies were generally small, sometimes lacked rigorous controls, and methodologies varied.

There is a biological rationale for its use, as Transfer Factor contains immune signaling molecules that can potentially "transfer" antigen-specific cell-mediated immunity from a donor to a recipient. Despite these promising results, more recent, large-scale, randomized controlled trials are lacking. Systematic reviews and authoritative guidelines do not currently recommend Transfer Factor as a standard or first-line treatment for herpes infections, citing insufficient high-quality evidence. In summary, while there is some scientific investigation into Transfer Factor for herpes, and moderate evidence of potential benefit, the evidence base is not strong enough to unequivocally support its clinical use for this indication.
