Evidence supporting the use of: Astaxanthin
For the health condition: Hypertension
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment found naturally in certain algae and seafood, such as salmon and shrimp. Its use for supporting or treating hypertension (high blood pressure) is primarily based on scientific interest due to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, rather than deep-rooted traditional use.
Several animal studies and a limited number of human trials have investigated astaxanthin's effects on blood pressure. In animal models, astaxanthin supplementation has been shown to reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure, possibly by improving endothelial function and reducing oxidative stress. The proposed mechanisms include enhancing nitric oxide availability, inhibiting angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity, and reducing vascular inflammation.
Human studies are fewer and generally small in scale. A 2011 randomized controlled trial found that astaxanthin supplementation (12 mg/day for 12 weeks) in overweight and obese subjects led to modest reductions in blood pressure. Another study in hypertensive patients reported similar moderate improvements. However, the effect size is generally small, and some studies have failed to show significant benefit.
Overall, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence suggesting astaxanthin may help reduce blood pressure, the clinical evidence is limited and not robust enough to recommend it as a primary treatment for hypertension. Therefore, astaxanthin’s use for this purpose is rated as a 2 out of 5 for evidence, reflecting early scientific interest but insufficient high-quality human data.
