Evidence supporting the use of: Bilberry
For the health condition: Hypertension
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) has been traditionally used in Europe for various health conditions, but its application for hypertension has gained some attention in scientific research. Bilberries are rich in anthocyanins and other polyphenolic compounds, which are believed to contribute to cardiovascular health by improving endothelial function and exerting antioxidant effects. Several animal studies and a few small human clinical trials suggest that bilberry extracts may have a beneficial impact on blood pressure. For example, anthocyanins have been shown to enhance nitric oxide production, leading to vasodilation and potentially reducing blood pressure. Some studies also indicate that regular consumption of bilberry or related berry extracts can lead to modest reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, especially in individuals with prehypertension or mild hypertension.
However, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence remain limited. Most human studies have small sample sizes, short durations, or lack rigorous controls. While the results are promising, larger, high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these effects and establish optimal dosages. For now, bilberry can be considered to have some scientific support for its use in supporting healthy blood pressure, but it should not be relied upon as a primary treatment for hypertension. Patients with high blood pressure should always follow evidence-based medical advice and use bilberry supplements, if at all, as a complementary approach.
