Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Citrulline alpha-ketoglutarate is a compound combining L-citrulline, a non-essential amino acid, and alpha-ketoglutarate, an intermediate in the citric acid cycle. The use of L-citrulline for hypertension is supported by some scientific evidence, primarily due to its role as a precursor to L-arginine, which is subsequently converted to nitric oxide (NO) in the body. NO is a vasodilator that helps relax blood vessels, potentially lowering blood pressure. Several small clinical studies have demonstrated that L-citrulline supplementation can lead to modest reductions in blood pressure, particularly in prehypertensive or mildly hypertensive individuals. However, the evidence is limited in size and scope, with most studies using L-citrulline alone rather than the alpha-ketoglutarate salt form.

There is little to no research specifically on citrulline alpha-ketoglutarate for hypertension. The alpha-ketoglutarate component is generally included to enhance athletic performance and is not known to have direct blood pressure-lowering effects. Therefore, while the use of citrulline-containing supplements for hypertension has some scientific basis, the specific combination with alpha-ketoglutarate has not been well studied for this purpose. Overall, the evidence supporting citrulline alpha-ketoglutarate for hypertension is weak to moderate (rated 2/5), and more robust, targeted clinical trials are needed.
