Duckweed protein, derived primarily from Lemna and Wolffia species, has recently gained attention as a potential dietary intervention for hypertension. The scientific evidence supporting its use is preliminary but promising. A limited number of small-scale animal and human studies suggest that duckweed protein may help lower blood pressure. This effect is hypothesized to be due to its high content of essential amino acids, micronutrients (such as potassium and magnesium), and bioactive peptides that may exhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity—mechanisms similar to those found in other plant-based proteins.
For example, a 2021 pilot randomized controlled trial (Shelef et al., Clinical Nutrition) found that a meal replacement containing Wolffia globosa reduced systolic blood pressure in adults with overweight and hyperlipidemia compared to a standard plant-based shake. However, the sample size was small and the intervention was short-term. Additional preclinical research supports potential antihypertensive effects through antioxidant properties and modulation of the renin-angiotensin system.
Despite these findings, the evidence is not yet robust. There are no large, long-term randomized controlled trials specifically examining duckweed protein for hypertension, and existing studies often use whole plant preparations rather than isolated protein. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and early clinical evidence, the support is limited and more research is needed to confirm efficacy and optimal use.
