Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been investigated for its potential to support cardiovascular health, including the management of hypertension. The scientific basis for its use is primarily attributed to the presence of polyphenolic compounds, especially catechins such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have examined the effects of green tea and green tea extracts on blood pressure.

A meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Nutrition (2014) reviewed 13 trials and found that green tea consumption was associated with a modest but statistically significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, particularly in individuals with elevated baseline blood pressure. Other systematic reviews have reported similar findings, though the magnitude of effect is generally small (typically reductions of 2-3 mmHg). The antihypertensive effects are thought to be mediated by improved endothelial function, enhanced nitric oxide bioavailability, and antioxidant properties that help reduce vascular inflammation.

While green tea has a long history of use in traditional medicine for general well-being, its specific application for hypertension is supported by modern clinical data rather than by historical tradition. The evidence is not as strong as that for established antihypertensive medications, but regular green tea consumption may be a helpful adjunct to lifestyle interventions for blood pressure control. It is important to note that results can vary based on dosage, preparation, and individual health status.
