Hygrophila, particularly species like Hygrophila auriculata (also known as "Kokilaksha" in Ayurveda), has been traditionally used in systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and Unani for various ailments, including hypertension. The rationale for its use in hypertension is largely based on its reported diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help in lowering blood pressure by promoting the excretion of excess fluids and reducing vascular resistance.
However, scientific studies directly evaluating the antihypertensive effects of Hygrophila are limited. A handful of animal studies have suggested that extracts of Hygrophila possess mild diuretic activity, which could theoretically contribute to blood pressure reduction. Nevertheless, these studies are preliminary, lack robust methodology, and have not been corroborated by large-scale human clinical trials. There is also a lack of consensus on the active constituents responsible for any antihypertensive effect, and the mechanism of action remains speculative.
