Indian Gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica), also known as Amla, has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine for various health conditions, including hypertension. Recent scientific studies have begun to investigate its potential effects on blood pressure. Some small-scale randomized controlled trials and animal studies suggest that Amla may have antihypertensive properties, likely due to its antioxidant content (notably vitamin C and polyphenols), as well as possible vasodilatory and cholesterol-lowering effects. For example, a 2012 human study published in the journal Indian Journal of Pharmacology found that daily administration of Amla powder led to a modest but statistically significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with mild to moderate hypertension compared to placebo.
However, the current body of evidence is limited: studies often involve small sample sizes, short durations, and varying preparations and dosages of Amla. Systematic reviews note that while preliminary results are promising, larger, high-quality trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety for hypertension management. Thus, while there is scientific exploration and some validation, the evidence is not strong or definitive enough for widespread clinical recommendation. The use of Indian Gooseberry for hypertension is therefore justified by a mix of traditional practice and early scientific findings, but the overall strength of evidence remains moderate to low.
